Overview
This course will introduce educators and practitioners to the newly updated eight-lesson curriculum developed collaboratively between HREA and PedagogyFutures. In each of the weekly meetings or intensive workshops, one or more of the curriculum’s themes will be presented and discussed, and activities will be carried out to facilitate educator learning and practice with the themes. In addition, the course offers supplemental, practical readings that are connected with the lesson topics.
The AI, Human Rights and Education curriculum fills a unique gap in addressing AI and its critical use in learning environments from a human rights perspective. It is also an opportunity to learn ‘the basics’ of AI as well as human rights education. This course will be useful for educators, regardless of previous experience or knowledge of AI and human rights.
Six-week Course
This course will be organized as follows:
Week 1: The Basics of AI and Ethical Frameworks
Week 2: The Basics of Human Rights and Evaluating the Impacts of AI using the Human Rights Framework
Week 3: Rights and Responsibilities when Using AI & AI Governance
Week 4: AI and Human Rights Literacy Building & Investigating AI Bias
Week 5: AI and the Right to Education
Week 6: Researching AI and Human Rights in Public Services
Intensive Saturday Workshops
This course will be organized as follows:

Learning Objectives
Those taking the course will have the opportunity to both learn the content of the curriculum as a learner, as well as consider how they might use the curriculum in their own teaching or training. By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify different kinds of AI and how they are used.
- Understand basic international human rights standards.
- Critically analyze the benefits and risks for AI use from a human rights perspective.
- Define AI governance and key actors involved.
- Analyze personal use of AI.
Logistics
Course Format: This course is being offered in two formats. Participants can choose to join either weekly sessions for six weeks, or two intensive workshops.
The six-week course will take place from February 18 – Mar 30, 2027, with live sessions of 1.5 hours on Tuesdays at 10am ET.
The live Saturday intensive workshops will take place on March 6 and 13, 2027 from 11am-1:30pm ET.
Who should apply: This course is intended for educators from the formal and non-formal education sectors. No previous knowledge of or experience with AI or human rights education is required.

Dr Felisa Tibbitts
Co-Founder and Director, Human Rights Education Associates (HREA)
Dr. Felisa Tibbitts, a leading international HRE expert, directs Human Rights Education Associates (HREA). She is UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Higher Education, and Chair in Human Rights Education at Utrecht University (Netherlands). Felisa has worked many years in teacher training and developed numerous curricula and resources with a human rights focus for UN agencies and international NGOs.
Nina Bamberg
Co-Founder & Associate Director, PedagogyFutures
Nina has an MA in International Educational Development from Teachers College at Columbia University and has worked for many years in education and nonprofit program management. Currently, she serves as the Associate Director of PedagogyFutures where she helps educators navigate the world of AI through workshops and online courses, curriculum, and policy resources. She also serves as the CPO at Academy 4 Social Civics, and works in adult education as a citizenship educator and as a Course Associate at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies. LinkedIn
